Investing in dividend paying stocks has been my most sustainable source of side income since starting The Money Sprout. Every month I publish a dividend income update of the stocks found in The Money Sprout Index.

This diversified set of stocks consists of some of the best managed companies in the world. Each of these companies consistently raise their dividend payouts annually, which means that I get a raise!

Here are my results for September, 2014 –

2014 September Dividend Income Results

I set a new personal record for dividend income in September! While I know that my dividend income fluctuates from month to month, it is still nice to break my old record.

Based on my current allocation, I would expect to break eventually break this months record in December. And another in March, etc.

This nice thing about investing in blue chip dividend stocks is that the companies give me a raise every year by increasing thier dividends. As long as I continue to invest in these types of companies and reinvest my dividends through DRiP, I will see growth in my monthly income.

September 2014 Dividend Income – $133.83

New Capital Invested in September

Reinvesting my dividends into new shares of stock using DRiP is a great tool to help grow my portfolio. However, the real growth for me right now will come grom new investments.

As my budget allows, every month I invest new captial into shares of dividend paying stocks.

Here are the new investments I made in September –

  • $50 automatic investment in Intel (INTC) – 1.44 shares
  • $25 automatic investment in Coca-Cola (KO) – .60 shares
  • $50 automatic investment in Microsoft (MSFT) – 1.11 shares

  • $250 automatic investment in Exxon Mobile (XOM) – 2.57 shares

Note – As with all of my recent purchases, all of my stock buys in September were from automatic monthly investments. I use LOYAL3 and computershare to setup my automated investments.

The total amount of new capital invested in September was – $475. This marks the third month in a row I have invested the same amount of new money. I would like to increase this amount over time as my budget allows. Here are my new investment totals for the year –

  • September Investments – $475.00

New 2014 Investments – $6,397.41

Final Thoughts

The dividend income earned in September ($133.83) was my highest month yet. I had 11 stocks in my portfolio pay out a dividend this month compared to only 4 last month. This is one of the reasons why my monthly income totals fluctuate so much.

While looking at my monthly dividend totals can be helpful, I prefer to focus more attention on the 3 month rolling average. Since all of the companies I own pay a quarterly dividend, the average of the past 3 months makes it easier to track month to month totals. During September, I was able to raise my 3 month rolling average to $84.30 79.33, which was a large spike of $4.97.

My total dividend income earned for 2014 so far (January to September) is – $697.98

Full Disclosure – At the time of this writing, I owned shares in the following stocks noted in this post – AFL, COP, ED INTC, JNJ, KO, MCD, MSFT, NSC, TGT, VZ, WMT, and XOM. The material above is not a recommendation to buy. Please do your own research on a company before deciding to invest.
